What do you want for Christmas?
Every now and then something spectacular comes along that has the guarantee to take your breath away. It is not often, though, there are many things to see and do that are not nearly as extravagant. This is, however, one such spectacle.
I watched the testing and maiden flight of Space Ship 1 some years ago and was quite impressed. Burt Ruttan, and his talented team, made some impressive engineering designs -- Break-throughs, really. They also made a great selection for the winning X-Prize astronaut, Brian Binnie. The next step was a logical one.
Virgin Galactic's goal is to end the exclusivity attached to manned space travel, which means designing a vehicle which can fly almost anyone to space and back safely, without the need for special expertise or exhaustive, time consuming training.
...Tickets cost $200,000 and deposits start from $20,000.
According to the Virgin Galactic Web Site, you can expect at least three days of training, some medical examinations, and getting to know the other astronauts. So far, they say 93% of the applicants have passed the medical requirements. The tests shouldn't be too stringent, however, you should work to be in the best physical shape possible if you intend to apply.
I will gladly accept all donations to achieve this personal, and truly remarkable goal. :-]
For those of you that do not feel that you can make such a trip, there is one other, less expensive, less strenuous alternative I recently came across that might interest you.
Virgin Galactic is ready. Are you?
